GEO Task ID-03: Science and Technology in GEOSS

Extended Task Sheet:
Expected Outcome by 2015

C1 Engaging the Science and Technology (S&T) Community in GEOSS Implementation

The overall output of this task and its component is improved buy-in of S&T Communities into GEO and GEOSS, leading to both improved support for the development of GEOSS and the data and services accessible through GEOSS, and a wider use of GEOSS by S&T communities.

Activity 1: Engage the science and technology community in the development of GEOSS

Activity 1.1: Develop a framework for the transition of relevant research infrastructures to sustained operation.

The main achievement of this activity will be a process for the identification of research infrastructure that contributes sugnificantly to the long-term observing systems and therefore should be continued in a sustained mode, and a process to promote such infrastructure within GEO and outside, so that resources for a sustained operation can be made available.

Activity 1.2: Encourage the incorporation of new technology in observing systems.

This activity will identify emerging technologies relevant to GEOSS and promote the incorporation of these technologies in GEOSS. The main achievement will be a GEOSS that is state-of-the-art.

Activity 1.3: Assess the requirement for continuity and long-term monitoring by Earth observation systems of essential data from GEOSS components.

The main outcome will be a report detailing the requirements for long-term monitoring as they relate to essential data. The User Requirement Registry will be used to identify these requirements.

Activity 1.4: Support state-of-the-art technology in the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI) and observation infrastructures.

This activity will link to those technology communities that can help to ensure a state-of-the -art GCI and observation infrastructure.

Activity 2: Develop incentives for science and technology communities

Activity 2.1: Devise a GEOSS Data Citation Standard (Roadmap Activity 2a; a GEOSS citation standard).

The main outcome will be the specification of the GEOSS Data Citation Standard and, together with the relevant IN Tasks, the implementation of this standard.

Activity 2.2: Develop a concept for a GEO Label (Roadmap Activity 2b; establishing a “GEO label”)

The main achievement of the activity will be the functional and design specification of the GEO Label and the implementation, together with the relevant IN task, of the label as part of the the GCI.

Activity 2.3: Develop a GEOSS Science and Technology Portfolio with compelling examples showing GEOSS at work for S&T (Roadmap Activity 2d; showing GEOSS at work: compelling examples).

This activity will complete the GEOSS S&T Portfolio and produce several documentations of this portfolio.

Activity 3: Establish links to major science and technology organizations and research institutions

This activity derives from Road Map Activity 2c “Build awareness of GEO and GEOSS in the different S&T communities, within the scope of GEOSS development”.

Activity 3.1 Establish an interactive directory of major professional science and technology organizations.

The main outcome will be an easy-to-update inventory, which can be consulted if there is a need to identify new organizations.

Activity 3.2 Inform organizations about GEO and GEOSS.

This activity will achieve an improved awareness of GEO and GEOSS in relevant S&T communities.

Activity 3.3 Establish a dialog and foster cooperation between GEO and major university networks.

This activity will achieve an improved awareness of GEO and GEOSS in universities, and the integration of GEOSS in education, where appropriate.

Activity 4: Promote GEOSS in science and technology communities

Activity 4.1: Organize special sessions on GEOSS and side events on GEO at major meetings.

The main achievement will be an improved awareness of GEO, GEOSS and the role of GEOSS for science and research through a series of special sessions and side events.

Activity 4.2: Implement a web-based interactive tool for the planning and documentation of GEO/GEOSS related presentations.

The activity will result in an improved tool for the planning and documentation of special sessions, side events, lectures and keynotes, at relevant meetings.

Activity 4.3: Slide library on how GEOSS works

The activity will result in an improved support for those who are giving presentations on GEO and/or GEOSS and need up-to-date slides for these presentations.

Activity 5: Auxiliary activities.

Activity 5.1: Enhancing registration of relevant scientific data sets (Roadmap Activity 2e).

The main achievement will be in the identification of relevant scientific data sets and their registration in the GCI.

Activity 5.2:Develop a high-level prospectus for a series of SBA-specific major conferences.

An important outcome of this activity would be an improved coordination of the many workshops and conferences organized by groups and CoPs in the nine SBAs.

Activity 5.3:Revolving scientific review of each Work Plan.

This activity aims to improve the scientific consistency of the Work Plan.

Activity 5.4:Support for the GEOSS Science and Technology Stakeholder Network.

The Stakeholder Network will achieve a better linkage between GEOSS and relevant S&T communities. Task Activity 5.4 and other Task Activities will support the Stakeholder Network in this goal.
