Status of Work

History of ST-09-02 Work

The Activity was initially led by ICSU. Later EGIDA contributed, and an initial list was compiled as an EGIDA deliverable (see pdf).

An initial list of organizations potentially relevant to GEO and GEOSS included:

Other suggestion were the IAEA, running the GNIP and GNIR networks (Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation, GNI in Rivers) in collaboration with WMO.

For Disasters, it was suggested to look at the following:

  • Global Earthquake Model, GEM
  • EC Framework Programme ENV Theme - e.g. 2011 call will include funding for Supersites initiative, which is now a GEO Task in the Disasters SBA.
  • ICSU Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Programme
  • National, UN and Aid agencies also fund relevant work: e.g. "UNESCO's scientific and technical contributions to disaster reduction are being promoted under the Organization's natural hazards programmes and in programmes related to the earth, water, ecological and oceanographic sciences, such as the International Hydrological Programme, the International Geoscience Programme, the Man and Biosphere Programme and the programmes of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission." The latter is directly relevant to a Task in the Disasters SBA, for example.
