International disaster research pogrammes: from knowledge to resilience

Juan Carlos Villagrán de León
UN-SPIDER Office in Bonn, Office for Outer Space Affairs, UNOOSA, Bonn, Germany

In recent decades, international organizations and consortia of academic and research institutions around the world have embarked on regional and global research programmes as a way to advance our knowledge on the root causes that lead to disasters, on ways to streamline early warning activities, and as a way to generate policy-relevant information to contribute to disaster risk reduction as a way to sustainable development. This presentation will provide an overview of several of these research programmes and how they have contributed to define the operational agendas of national, regional and international agencies in disaster risk reduction. The presentation will conclude with several remarks regarding the need to consider effective interfaces to enhance the intake of information stemming from such research efforts by the disaster-risk management and the development community.
