GEOSS: Supporting Science for the Millennium Development Goals and Beyond
Bonn, Germany, August 28—31, 2012

Vivian Lutz

Vivian is a biological oceanographer specialized in bio-optics and phytoplankton primary production. She works for the Argentinian National Research Council (CONICET) at the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INIDEP). One of the main aims of her work is following a time-series-study of optical properties at a coastal station to detect possible changes in the phytoplankton conditions, due to natural or external causes. She also works towards contributing to a better knowledge of variations in primary production in the Argentine Sea to be used in fisheries and in gas-exchange (CO2 between the ocean and the atmosphere) studies, combining field with satellite modelling. Vivian is an active member of the Latin-American network for coastal oceanographic observations Antares (www.antares.ws), and of the global network ChloroGIN (www.chlorogin.org). She acted as the coordinator of Antares from its creation in 2003 until 2009. She has taught in several international courses on phytoplankton bio-optics, directs the work of graduate students, and has participated in more than 90 oceanographic cruises.

Area of expertise: Marine bio-optics, phytoplankton primary production.
